Separation anxiety

Separation anxiety is one of the most common reasons for which dogs get surrendered to shelters. When a dog suffers from a separation related disorder (srd) separation from the owner is incredibly stressful and upsetting for them. Common symptoms include barking, whining, scratching the door, peeing/pooping indoors, destructive behavior etc. SRD is also very distressing for the owners, for many peaople it makes them feel like they’re your dog’s “prisoner”.

Over the course of SRD therapy we use systematic desensitization, which means that we teach the dog that being left home alone is a safe (and boring!) experience. We do it in very small steps, in order to avoid fear reactions.

While we work on the problem, the dog must not be left alone outside of the training sessions! Otherwise the training basically starts from scratch.

The training takes place online, using personal training diaries which get updated before each training session. Thanks to that we can follow the dog’s learning journey and see precisely which elements of the training are particularly difficult for them.

The therapy of SRD is often long (think months rather than weeks) and can be very challenging, but the good news is that compared to other behavior problems SRD has quite a high resolution rate.
